Natalie Jett is an indie dyer and maker, with a fabulous sense of humor. Her shop name, “Knottee Hooker,” makes me smile every time I see it! Get to know her and find out how she’s dispelling “the myth that crocheting is only granny squares.”

What inspired you to start knitting or crocheting?

I taught myself to crochet when I was around 10-11. I couldn’t figure out how to get the ends to be straight so I ended up with a lot of halter tops, but I was young enough to get away with wearing them. When I started college I was determined to learn so I bought a book and taught myself how to do it right. But even then I mostly made just granny squares or afghans. I taught myself to knit last November using the Portuguese knitting method.

Has knitting or crocheting gotten you through a difficult time in your life? If so, how did it help?

I am sitting here typing this with a sweatshirt on that says “I crochet so I don’t kill people.” LOL. I tell people all the times that crocheting keeps me off America’s Most Wanted.

What keeps you obsessed?

As a crocheter, when you venture into a local yarn shop and tell them that you crochet you get treated like a red-headed step child because they assume I am making afghans. So it became my mission to crochet beautiful garments and dispel that myth that crocheting is only granny squares, afghans or those horrid toilet tissue covers.

What’s your favorite project that you’re working on right now?

I have cast on my first pair of socks using my own hand dyed yarn. I hope to finish the pair before the year is out. LOL.

What project are you most proud of? Why?

My “The Girl from the Grocery Store” knitted shawl. I had tried to learn to knit several times through the years but just couldn’t get the hang of holding the needles and yarn. When a friend told me to try Portuguese knitting and it worked I was so thrilled!

What’s the best knitting or crochet advice you received?

To do your own thing. There is no wrong way to crochet or knit.

Has pop culture had an influence on your knitting or crochet?

There is always something that seems to be trending. Right now, what’s been popular for me are Scott Pilgrim inspired hats. I have no idea who Scott Pilgrim is but apparently it’s a movie and the hats have kept me busy for the last few months.
