And so my May #pennydreadfulkal intensive begins! First up, figuring out how to count the transition from ribbing to moss stitch.

As you may remember from last month, I ripped back because I counted incorrectly. I realized this happened for a number of reasons:

  1. I was trying to count the selvedge and it wasn’t totally reliable- if you made a mistake and purled one, it also makes it confusing.
  2. When I counted one of the center sections, I didn’t always remember that some of the knit stitches were k2tog in the first row, which I think confused me on which row to start counting.

Reading your knitting is a skill that is constantly lauded by talented knitters as something you need to understand, but it’s not something that comes easily without getting in the weeds with it (for me anyway.)

So I started the second front panel of the cardigan and took photos of every row, to make sure I really understood how the moss stitch worked and how the ribbing to moss stitch transition worked. The pink yarn was threaded through on the last row of ribbed stitches.

The thing that truly makes counting your rows easier, is spreading them out. Pulling the stitches horizontally, helped to see the stitches so much better!

I also updated row 19 in this post of the first front panel to make sure the repeats made sense.

#PennyDreadfulKAL Shoutout to Friends:

You too can be a part of the knit-a-long! If you’d like to knit-a-long, use the hashtag #PennyDreadfulKAL on Instagram, comment on my Penny Dreadful Knit-A-Long posts, or you can sign up for my weekly newsletter here. Anyone who uses the hashtag on Instagram, or signs up for my newsletter, or comments, will be emailed a PDF version of the finished pattern once the knit-a-long concludes in May. (Ok,  more like June. I think I’m going to need a little time to get this pattern tech-edited.)

#PennyDreadfulKAL Goals:

Write the mirror version pattern of the other front panel. I’m going to try and start working on the sleeves for next week as well.
