I am frequently amazed by the vulnerability and honesty that crafters bring to the interviews here. I am so lucky to be able to share their stories. Also, how great is the name “The Shawl Whisperer”?! Read my interview with Brandese to learn more about how knitting for others got her through a difficult time, and check out her beautiful shawls.

What inspired you to start knitting?

I suffer from anxiety so it helps to keep my mind calm and from wandering all over the place!

Has knitting gotten you through a difficult time in your life? If so, how did it help?

There was a point where I didn’t want to live anymore, sadly. Counseling and knitting helped to keep me focused and my hands busy. Seeing my friends wear my knitted items and love them keep me going!

What keeps you obsessed?

I love learning new techniques (although I’m afraid of brioche! Lol) and seeing the project through makes me happy! I love creating and seeing the item as it’s being knitted! When it’s finished, I say “WOW! I MADE THAT!!!!” So then I have to go make something else!

What’s your favorite project that you’re working on right now?

Currently I’m knitting a shawl named Coax. I LOVE the classic black & white stripes against a solid color! [Editor’s note: I love Lisa Mutch’s designs too!]

What project are you most proud of? Why?

I would say my Lunar Revel Shawl! It was my first fingering weight shawl AND my first German short row pattern!! I love butterflies and this shawl is shaped like one!!

What’s the best knitting  advice you have received?

When you get frustrated, just put it down and knit something else. Go back to it later.
